Top SDR Compensation Trends in Tech for 2026

April 28, 2026

The Sales Development Representative (SDR) role has undergone more structural change over the past three years than many other go-to-market (GTM) roles in the technology sector. Our latest Compensation Guide documents how those shifts are now reflected in salary benchmarks, hiring timelines, and the skill profiles that companies are actively recruiting for in 2026.

Compensation for sales development roles has remained steady since 2025. However, the surrounding hiring landscape has shifted considerably, particularly regarding candidate availability, role expectations, and the factors that distinguish a competitive offer from one that stalls a search.

This blog covers the current data from Betts’ research alongside the trends that matter most for hiring managers making SDR compensation decisions in the year ahead:

How the SDR Landscape Has Evolved

The SDR role has been in ongoing upheaval since the post-pandemic period. In 2023, average salary rates decreased for the first time since 2020. Then in 2024, SDR hiring fell to roughly half from its pandemic-era peak, driven by a combination of economic pressure, AI-driven automation, and a broader shift toward more experienced, specialized go-to-market (GTM) hires.

By 2025, base salaries for SDRs showed some signs of recovery. However, while there were sporadic increases in some regions, earnings for top performers in tech hubs stagnated. Entry-level GTM roles also started to decline as more companies adopted AI-powered solutions.

2026 has so far told a similar story, though noticeable differences are emerging.

2026 SDR Compensation Data

SDR compensation remains virtually unchanged from 2025 rates. Entry-level candidates earn an average base salary between $55,000-$70,000, while those with at least six months of experience command a range from $60,000-$75,000.

Meanwhile, on-target earnings (OTE) range from 20%–60% of base salary, depending on location.

The tables below are drawn directly from the 2026 Betts Compensation Guide and cover salary ranges and target benchmarks for Sales Development Representatives across US markets.

Top Trends Shaping SDR Compensation in 2026

Several market trends carry direct implications for how hiring managers should approach SDR compensation, sourcing, and role design in the year ahead. Below are the shifts most immediately impacting offer structures, talent availability, and what a competitive search for sales development talent looks like today:

SDRs with Prompt Engineering Skills are in High Demand

SDRs with prompt engineering capabilities are currently one of the most in-demand GTM profiles. Hiring teams are increasingly evaluating how candidates use AI-powered prospecting tools and whether they can build and refine prompts that enable effective outreach at scale. This shift is reshaping both job descriptions and interview processes to better identify the top talent.

SDR vs. Sales Development Analyst

A growing number of technology companies are moving away from the classic SDR title toward Sales Development Analyst (SDA). While entry-level SDRs have traditionally been expected to learn prospecting fundamentals through a structured development program, SDAs are expected to arrive already fluent in AI tools for outreach personalization, account research, and pipeline reporting.

The Vanishing Entry-Level Career Path for AEs

Today, the SDR candidates competing for limited roles tend to be more technically capable. The time it takes to fill a search below the target compensation benchmark has also extended noticeably.

Offers at or above target attract the broadest qualified pool and fill fastest, while below-target offers extend the search timeline and limit the available candidate pool considerably. High performers on leaner, AI-enabled teams are advancing faster through promotion timelines than their counterparts in the volume-based SDR programs of prior years. Communicating a faster advancement trajectory during the offer stage gives hiring teams a practical edge when working with a smaller candidate pool.

Building AI Fluency Through Self-Directed Learning

In the current market, learning communities and self-directed skill development are a meaningful differentiator among SDR candidates. There are many venues where entry-level sales reps can build meaningful capabilities, such as peer networks and AI literacy events.

AI fluency is the current hiring baseline for GTM roles. Additionally, compensation premium is reserved for candidates who have applied AI-powered tools within a specific vertical or product category. Those who built that depth through peer communities and self-directed experimentation tend to arrive more adaptable than candidates whose exposure came solely from a previous employer’s tech stack. Inquiring into where and how candidates developed their skills helps hiring teams more reliably assess whether those competencies will transfer to a new environment.
