Top Tech Content Marketing Manager Salary Trends in 2023

The Betts Team
March 2, 2023

The salary trends for content marketing managers in the tech industry did not see a whole lot of change from 2021 to 2022. However, the key difference in 2023 – for all marketer roles in the space – is a greater emphasis on experience, which means that entry-level positions are seeing less compensation overall. While a progression of layoffs in technology have shrunk rates for junior marketers for now, we expect these to climb back up by 2024. For a broader view on salary trends across go-to-market (GTM) roles in tech, check out our updated Compensation Guide here for the full story.

Continue reading below to see how salaries for tech content managers have changed for the next year:

The Role of Content Marketing in Tech

Nearly every industry needs a content marketing manager today if they want to stay ahead of the competition in an increasingly digital world, filled with endless search engine optimization (SEO) factors, social media channels and more. However, the tech space is not only always hungry for new content, but for SAAS in particular there is a considerable demand for technical education on all of the new technologies and products that emerge every year.

Tech content marketing is still going through a lot of twists and turns over what makes the best approach – junior content writer versus experienced manager, in-house versus agency, etc. – but the end result is still that most companies need a content pipeline to keep traffic coming back to their websites and more.

Top Content Marketing Manager Salary Trends This Year

According to data collected across our network, the average salary for content marketing managers in the tech industry is about $100,000 – $140,000 throughout the US. However, this number can vary depending on factors such as location. When broken down by time zone, here are the adjusted rates:

  • Eastern (ET): $100,000 – $140,000
  • Pacific (PT): $100,000 – $140,000
  • Central (CT): $100,000 – $130,000
  • Mountain (MT): $90,000 – $130,000

Also, content managers in the top tech hubs of New York and San Francisco saw a higher average range of $110,000 – $150,000, illustrating how much it could vary from city to city.

On-track earnings (OTE) varied too much to nail down an average rate for tech content marketers, but was generally dependent on experience and the amount of additional compensation (bonuses, equity, stock, etc.) included.

Content Manager Benefits

While salary growth for content marketing managers in tech slowed overall between 2021 and 2022, many companies have opted to improve or add more job perks to attract and retain top talent. Benefits packages may include healthcare, retirement plans, commuter benefits, gym stipends and unlimited paid time off. Other benefits, such as flexible work arrangements, work from home options, and professional development opportunities, are also becoming more common.

Remote Content Marketers

While remote content marketers commanded above average salary ranges throughout 2021, the following year saw their rates even out with those of their on-site peers. As many marketing departments are trying to transition back to in-office or hybrid models post-pandemic, we expect to see slowly increasing compensation rates to incentivize those that are willing to give up working from home solely.

Recruiting Agencies, RPO Providers and Software

With demand for content marketing managers trending towards more experienced professionals with certain skill sets, many tech startups are turning to third-party solutions to shore up candidate sourcing gaps, especially for those with no talent acquisition team in place. These include traditional search recruiting agencies, recruitment process outsourcing (RPO) firms and various hiring platforms like Betts Connect, LinkedIn and Built In. Leveraging these kinds of services allows technology companies of all sizes to find best fit candidates often much faster than by self-sourcing means.
