I recently heard the famous Tony Robbins speak at INC5000’s conference in San Antonio. It was an electric presentation of success stories for how to live each day in a beautiful state (I mean c’mon, as a New Yorker, that sounds great).

My biggest takeaway was Tony explaining the 3 forces of creation. You need to have focus (the power of absolute clarity), take massive action (effective execution), and grace (his live in a beautiful state idea).

I resonated with the focus and clarity theme because they’ve been on my mind for weeks. As a leader, if I don’t focus my goals or my vision, how can I expect my team to focus? And how can I ever expect them to be successful if there’s no clarity around what success looks like?

Inspired by Robbins, Salesforce’s founder Marc Benioff wrote a framework to create organizational alignment and communication while growing at TOP speed. As featured in his book Behind the Cloud, the “V2MOM” model is a game changer. I realized how this exercise could help my team in Q4. Create alignment 45 days into the quarter to close it out strong. Today, we completed our V2MOM in 45 minutes and had fun thinking aloud together. See below for the breakdown.

Execute this exercise with your team, with your office, with your company. Execute this on new initiatives or ideas. It can be big or small but agree on thoughtful answers.


Vision, Values, Methods, Obstacles and Measures.


The vision helped us define what we wanted to do.

The values established what was most important about that vision; it set the principles and beliefs that guided it (in priority).

The methods illustrated how we would get the job done by outlining the actions and the steps that everyone needed to take.

The obstacles identified the challenges, problems, and issues we would have to overcome to achieve our vision.

Finally, the measures specified the actual result we aimed to achieve; often this was defined as a numerical outcome.

Combined, V2MOM gave us a detailed map of where we were going as well as a compass to direct us there.
