The Importance of Writing a Post-Interview Thank You Note

Proper business etiquette always calls for sending a thank you note to your hopeful future employer to reiterate your appreciation for their time and consideration for the desired job position.

While landing a job can be difficult, sending a personalized thank you note is a key aspect of the job interview that will help you both stand out as a candidate and speed up the closing process.

Use these tips to write a stellar thank you note and push your candidacy to the next step:

Get a business card from every person you talk to during the interview process.

This way, you aren’t endlessly searching on Google and LinkedIn for their email address when it comes time to send a thank you letter.

Send your thank you note within 24 hours of the job interview

After all, it reflects who you are and your professional acumen so you want them to acknowledge your punctuality and thoughtfulness. Because the lag-time associated with snail mail can often get in the way of a quick close on a job offer, a thank you note sent over email is better than no thank you at all.

Personalize your thank you note

Everyone else who has interviewed with this company will be writing a thank you note, so try to write something that separates you from the clusters of other candidates for the job. Include something personal about the conversation you had so the potential employer is easily able to remember who you are and why you make the best candidate for the position.

Reiterate your appreciation and end with an action item

Be sure to thank your interviewer for their time and consideration, and leave them with an action item (“I look forward to the next step” or “Please do not hesitate to contact me further”). Don’t make them pull up your resume if they wish to contact you. Leave your contact information at the end of your letter for their convenience.

Don’t let your great job interview go to waste because you forgot to thank your potential new employer for taking time out of their day to meet you. By following these simple steps, you will stand out as a potential new candidate and your interviewer will appreciate your thoughtful note.
