Your Job Search and All Things Social

The Betts Team
September 6, 2012

Job hunting is a field that is constantly changing and evolving. As technology develops at an exponential rate, it continually adapts the way the business world functions. As we have discussed before, the paper resume is a practice of the past. There’s a good chance you won’t find your dream job by submitting your resume to the black hole that is corporate career sites and you definitely won’t in the classified section.

Social media is an incredibly powerful tool that, if wielded correctly, can lead to the professional equivalent of serious ROI. The classic view of Facebook as a social network simply shared among friends is something of the past (circa 2005). Social Media is networking at its best; the perfect channel to harness your potential opportunities. Social media vehicles, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and even site like Google+ and Pinterest, go beyond connections, becoming a great source for job postings, recruiting events, and career development.

Not only does social media provide an elaborate web for networking and exposure, but it also displays qualities that every employer is looking for. How professional your social media profiles are, how well you are utilizing the facets of LinkedIn and if you are marketing yourself to display your tech knowhow and professional toolset. As Jerome Ternynck perfectly stated, “Our digital footprints reveal more about our talents, interests and experience than the traditional resume ever did — or ever will again.”

Let the facts speak for themselves. A recent survey on Social Recruiting conducted by Jobvite showed:

• 92% use or plan to use social recruiting

• 43% of recruiters who use social recruiting saw an increase in candidate quality

• 73% have successfully hired a candidate through social

• 31% of recruiters using social have seen a sustained increase in employee referrals

From the recruiting side, we see a huge correlation between social media presence and strength of the candidate. Given that Betts works specifically within the tech sphere, we seek out savvy individuals who thrive on cutting edge products and networks. Tech is for the knowledge hungry, people who crave information and are willing to seek it out and apply it.  Don’t miss out on incredible opportunities that are at your very fingertips- go social with your job search!
