Changing jobs is a tough decision for anyone. But people do it all the time.

In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 5.1 million Americans got hired for a new job in the month of August (on an interesting side note, the report also goes on to show that 2.7 million Americans quit their jobs).

As a Hiring Manager, how do you convince someone who’s on the fence to quit his or her safe and cozy job, and take a chance and come work for you?

Short answer: turn on the love!

When someone is on the job hunt they’re typically in a vulnerable place, and possibly unsure about their future. As a Hiring Manager, it’s sometimes easy to forget that your job isn’t just finding the right person for the job, but it’s also selling the job to the right person.

5 Ways to Get People to Quit Their Job, and Come Work for You

  1. Learn What Makes Them Tick

Why are they unsure about the job? What are their hesitations about accepting an offer? A good question to ask them is, “If I offered you the job today, what hesitations or concerns would you have?” Ask enough questions to find out if they are unsure about the job, or just simply not interested.

  1. Make it Personal

Sometimes it can relieve some stress about joining a new team if you show them that both you and their new team are excited to have them onboard. Give them a call, sending them an email or text message that everyone is looking forward to having them start can get them excited as well.

  1. Remind Them Why They Want to Quit their Current Job

During the interview, remember to ask why they want to quit their current job. Do they not like their team? Is there no career growth? Find out why they’re making the move so you can be the solution to that problem.

  1. Make it an Easy Choice

What makes your company great? Why is a future in your company a smarter choice than staying at their old company?

There’s a great story about Steve Jobs trying to lure Pepsi executive John Sculley to Apple by saying, “Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to come with me and change the world?”

  1. Help Them Quit

Sometimes all you need is a little push…

Ask them when they are going to talk to their boss, what they are going to say and even help them write their letter of resignation. Follow up with the candidate and ask them how the discussion went. If they’re having trouble, coach them through the process and help them visualize actually having the conversation.
