Last night, Betts Recruiting hosted Breaking Into Tech Sales Women Edition. The event brought together a panel of four remarkable women in tech sales, including: Darcey Harrison of Swiftype, Kathryn Aimaq of Trinet, Emily Zahuta of Betts Recruiting, and Joy Aaring of Lyft. Moderated by Alexandra Adamson of Betts Recruiting, the panel discussed how each of the women got into tech sales and what they have learned in the industry. Below are four pieces of advice each of the women shared with the audience.

Sales Doesn’t Have a Background

The sales industry can be daunting, especially to women. But in reality, sales has dramatically changed from the boy’s club mentality. If you’re curious about sales, do some research. Learning about the different roles that have arisen from the tech industry may intrigue you more than you thought. With Account Executives, Demand Gen Marketing, and Customer Success all new roles that have developed rapidly in recent years, there are a lot more opportunities that fall under the sales umbrella. Each of the panelists discussed their different career paths and none of them thought they would end up in sales. There is no ideal sales background. If you’re curious about sales, don’t be afraid to jump in and try it. Focus more on why you are interested in the industry rather than worry about your lack of experience. Professional knowledge can always be learned!

Do it for you

Find a position that fits with your personality. Understanding what motivates you and the ideal work environment can make sure you pick a position that will help you grow professionally. Taking online personality quizzes, networking to learn more about day-to-day activities, and researching the different segments within each department can help you narrow your focus. If you’re driven and have grit, don’t shy away from sales! If you believe in how you want to be perceived, then your confidence will be apparent. Coming into a sales position, especially as a woman, makes you unique in the different ways you bring value to a company. Use your empathy, listening skills, and ability to relate as strengths rather than shortcomings. Go into sales knowing you have the skills and drive to succeed.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for It

Whether you’re looking to get into sales, or are looking to move up professionally, don’t be afraid to ask for it. You are the only person looking out for your career. If you think you deserve a new responsibility or are interested in learning more, go ahead and put yourself into the mix. To be truly successful in an industry, you have to be always looking to learn. Take feedback from everyone, regardless of seniority or department. Continuous learning can demonstrate why you are an asset to a company. If you bring more to your company, you deserve to ask for notice. Although reaching out for acknowledge may seem counterintuitive for some women, don’t be afraid of fear. Follow your gut when it comes to knowing whether or not you’re ready to take on something new!

Mentors are Key

Having a mentor is a great way to learn more and develop your career. Don’t shy away from reaching out on LinkedIn to someone who is in an industry or role you are interested in. Find some commonality and personalize your note. Many people are more than willing to help you out. When it comes to asking for a mentor, don’t sell yourself short. You can always bring something of value to the people you are reaching out to. Especially as a woman in sales, you can always reach out other women for advice. Don’t limit yourself to just one mentor either. You can have more than one for any aspect of you’re life you’re looking to grow.
